In this seminar, Olga Trevisan and Jessica Guy led the class. It was a mix of in-person and online learning.
We partnered closely with FabLab BCN, a group that helps people make things, and students and teachers from Manchester Metropolitan University and SODA (the School of Digital Arts in Manchester).
During the class, we looked at how creative industries and decentralized governance are connected. We learned about new technologies like Blockchain, NFTs, Decentralized Autonomous Organizations, and Smart Contracts. We also worked on a project with students from MMU and SODA to see how these technologies can be used to share creative work online and make prototypes for real-world use
He had to apply what we learned in the talks, addressing difficult challenges and how to implement change collectively using the NFT system and the DAFNE platform. In the end, we developed an educational tool to combat fascism
In our group, we focused on combating the resurgence of fascism worldwide through a VR video game, hosted on the Dafne+ platform. Players immerse themselves in a city under fascist rule, assuming the role of a journalist exploring and interacting with the environment. They document observations of concerning or unjust occurrences within the game, which are immediately logged on the blockchain and shared on a discussion forum. This dialogue fosters understanding and empathy, addressing the root causes of extremism – feelings of neglect and marginalization.
After completing the game, players create unique avatars representing the regime's leader, which are minted as NFTs. Funds generated from minting and purchasing these NFTs support a decentralized autonomous organization dedicated to global de-radicalization efforts. NFT owners gain voting rights within the organization, empowering them to participate in decision-making processes regarding the allocation of funds for de-radicalization initiatives.
It was an intriguing seminar for me because I wasn't very familiar with the topics discussed. These concepts are often mentioned, but I never fully grasped their meaning until now. While I'm not particularly fond of these systems, understanding them, especially in their intended context, is beneficial. I do value the proposal to explore different avenues for achieving equality and democratization.
